Shortly after throwing its support behind a controversial proposal
allowing copyright holders to disable machines found to hold pirated
material, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) Web site
last weekend suffered a denial-of-service attack. No direct link to the
RIAA's support for Sen. Howard Berman's draft has been noted in news
reports, but the organization is known for its pursuit of copyright
violators and stance against peer-to-peer music programs used to exchange
copies of music and video files without the content holder's permission.
"Don't they have something better to do during the summer than hack our
site? Perhaps it at least took 10 minutes away from stealing music,"
quipped one RIAA spokesman in a Reuters news report.
DoS = Denial of Service
