    Cable vs. DSL?

Hi peeps, I am currently using cable for my broadband. I get it through Bright House (about $45 per month). Recently, some dude from BellSouth called me and sold me on testing their DSL to see if I like it. It seems much cheaper (around $35 per month), and it is a guranteed 3Mbs throughput. I've clocked my cable and it was like 1.5Mbs. Thus, so far, DSL looks like a better alternative. Did anyone have any experience with broadband DSL? I am concerned about connectivity, I need a true "always on" connection, without any dialing or even as little as triggering involved. My broadband will feed into WiFi router. My laptop, PCs and printers are connected through the router. Any feedback from anyone with similar setup? Thanks!

I have using ADSL from bellsouth for 2 years. Never had a problem with it. I use alcatel Home speed touch modem and D-Link router. Use energy of enemy against himself.

    Cable vs. DSL?

I use a service from Bellsouth called IFITL. They basically ran Cat-5 cable from my house to the switch. The catch is that you have to live close to one. The performance is the same as for ADSL only IFITL phy layer is fiber while for ADSL it is copper. Overall, the performance depends on many things besides the advertised upload and download speed, such as load on the remote server. For me, the speed rarely if ever reaches the advertised maximum. Stas, а как ты коннектишся в Винде? Do you use a dialer or is it really "always on"?

The modem BS will give you will do everything for you. Winda will think it's on a network and don't even has a modem..... But the speed will depend on the distance to CO and quality of wires and wiring going into your house....

Router is taking care of connection and authentication. If you don't have a router, you better run some firewall on windows.

    Cable vs. DSL?

Finally, my DSL modem has arrived and could do some speed testing. Here are the results. (Results may vary for different locations.) My TimeWarner cable maxed out at: download: 2.5Mbs upload: 350Kbs The contender, BellSouth Xtreme DSL (3.0Mbs "promised" during the sale): download: 1.2Mbs upload: 280Kbs The top values were taken from 10 different measurements, conducted throughout the day for each modem. The ease of setting up is about the same. Both connections are true "always on" types of networking. BellSouth DSL requires special "line filters" to be plugged into phone wall outlets (which is not that big of a deal). The BellSouth stuff has been packed and shipped back. Adios, BellSouth.

We have Time Warner (road runner) and BellSouth here also. I have had both and couldn't tell any speed difference...though I never clocked it as you have. I chose BellSouth this time because it is nearly impossible to talk to a human by phone about any technical problems at Time Warner and because Time Warner insists on hooking it up in person.

    Cable vs. DSL?

These services are very easy to install. The problem is that the companies fail to come with easy to follow instructions and folks often get confused. There are like 2 wires to connect, and it's all ready to go. I find it funny how all these multibillion dollar businesses can't get it right.

    Cable vs. DSL?

I used to have BellSouth High-speed internet service and now have Comcast. Never had any problems with Bellsouth, but Comcast was down twice in the first month. Had to wait over 40 minutes on hold to get to technical support. The main reason I wanted to get cable is to avoid having to buy phone line from BellSouth. Otherwise, I don't see any speed difference.

    Cable vs. DSL?

I have had cable for longest of time... i tried using DSL and dont see any speed difference though cable is better financially (dont need to have home phone line and have a package with TV)... Also had problems with cable in the beginning but worked well since then.

    Cable vs. DSL?

Completely agree with Kostya & Lionya - if you do not need a phone line than is it better to have Comcast cable than DSL. Also I spoke recently with BellSouth and they said that they are planning to offer DSL WITHOUT a phone line within one year. Other telephone companies like Verizon already could install DSL without a phone line but BellSouth can not offer such service yet.

    Cable vs. DSL?

My personal experience with cable was always the same - had to come back to it. DSL is always been a problem for me. I just recall having reliable service once, the rest of the time couldn't keep the damn thing connected. Cable on other hand is no problem. Had it for 2 years now with only 2 downtimes. Second one was due to me installing crappy splitter.
