    Nostalgia for CCCP?

These analogies and metaphors y'all come up with are exhausting to decipher. If you are selling peanut butter cookies at a public bake sale, and somebody that's allergic to peanuts comes up to your table, do you hide all the cookies so they aren't offended? The Cold War ended on December 26, 1991 with the dissolution of the USSR. What comes after that is a new chapter. That was 16 years ago - not long after 'young buck' was born.

Hmm, are you referring to flip-flops as in John Kerry or as in those nasty trailer trash 'slippers' that spread the big and 2nd toes apart (for ventilation?) ? Either way, can't stand both :) No offense to ANYONE here, but I think that wearing flip flops to any occasion beyond a public park/swimming pool is committing an act of trailer trash :) man i hate those shoes... nothing more annoying that watching a woman enter the 'scene' only to digust me with her nasty-ass feet by wearing flip flops. especially women with bunyans. ugh..

JB,what you said is complete BS.... 1.people come here and want to stay here and hopefully integrate into the society(or whatever, I don't really want to use "big " words now).... and there is no problems with bringing your own heritage and making it part of what your life is all about, what defines you, interests you, etc.,.... but why sticking it to other people 's faces....Is it a National Pride Parade?... and especially since we for the most part are American Citizens by choice.... who are they trying to kid? whatever you try to say with Public bake sale---I didn't get it 2. Cold War might've ended then the way it used to be... but it's been a long time since it's restarted... it might be labeled differentely and rules of the game and means are different, and in todays "war" there maybe more parties than just 2 involved... but it doesn't change the core of it...you should listen to Russian (Anti-american) TV sometimes...IMHO of course...

You have to be kidding!!! The only good association that one may have with the symbol of swastika is Buddhism/Hinduism, where this symbol has been standing for "well-being" for centuries. And the West (Germany) has corrupted the meaning of this symbol in 1920s. Now the usage of this symbol poses a great controversy.

Great Russian writers that everyone talks about came out of Russia in the 19th century and 20th centuries. Many of them came out of the USSR, not Russia. Peter the Great was a visionary king, but was he great? Do you realize that he murdered his own son? Do you realize that hundreds of thousands of people died building the grand city of Saint Petersburg on the cold marsh lands of the North? Is he great? Maybe, all depends on how you define "great." Best-tasting food is Russian? Wise people say "о вкусах не спорят" ... so I won't :)

I don't know much about Jewish persecution in the USSR, and I am sorry to hear that your family went through all of this. I know of some Jewish people who lived in the USSR and never felt like they were treated any differently from the rest. USSR has achieved in decades what would've taken much longer for the Russian tsars to achieve: industrialization and education. These are HUGE achievements.

I disagree. Most Americans know nothing about USSR, and whoever does seem to possess some knowledge, it usually is very one-sided. So they dislike these stickers for all the wrong reasons. Saying that the USSR sticker is the same as the German swastika is INSANE, and is a result of American education...

Good response to a "not-so-good" analogy!

    Nostalgia for CCCP?

I don't have a CCCP sticker on my car, I have an RUS one, but I have a couple of CCCP/USSR track jackets, and I rock one of these often: And if some one doesn't like they may off themselves, but I am not taking this off, since it is true.

The next cold war? The U.S. is planning to sell $20 Billion of high tech weaponry to Saudi Arabia and other (sunni) gulf nations.... The next Cold War may take place in the middle East instead of Europe? Talk about perverted ideology...

I'm not smart enough to even guess at the Russian and US strategies for how things will play out in the Middle East over the next few years. Neither Communism nor Democracy are models that work in Muslim countries. What I do see is a chess board. On the Russian side: King = Russia Queen = Iran Horse = Syria Castle = Lebanon Knight = "hamastan"? On the USA side: King = USA Queen = Saudi Arabia Horse = Turkey Castle = Egypt Knight = Jordan (don't take all that too literally) Pawns = diplomots, military strategists, Iraq/Afghanistan/Palestine.... You can bet a lot of smart people are making moves way down the logic line....trying to optimize their game plan.

castle is not a chess piece. and strongest piece is queen, not king. in fact, other than in endgames, king is one of the weakest pieces.

hmmmm.... on my chess board there is a castle - it's the piece to the far left/right of the board. It can move any number of spaces in a horizontal/vertical pattern. When the king falls, the game is over. The king will manipulate the queen into doing his bidding. In this case, the king will sacrifice all other players on the board to accomplish his strategic goals. He will simply sit back and watch everybody else on the board get slaughtered.

The piece you are referring to as 'castle' is called a rook. the term 'castle' in chess is actually a certain kind of 'move' which involves the rook and the king (a safety move). yes, king is an important piece as you describe but it doesn't change the fact that it is a relatively weak piece. and the king doesn't 'sacrifice' or 'manipulate' anything. the chess player does all this and the king is nothing more than a piece, which if checkmates, makes you lose the game. the queen is still the strongest piece, followed by the rook. your analogy of chess and world politics doesn't really work. even if it did, russia would be the queen and not the king.

I consulted Wiki, and you are right. So much for my good analogy/metaphor.... Any comment on the $20B arms deal?
